Public Input Sought on the Draft List of Issues for the Energy East and Eastern Mainline Projects

On May 10, 2017, the National Energy Board (“NEB” or “the Board”) released two separate draft Lists of Issues for the Energy East and Eastern Mainline Projects. The Board is seeking public input on topics that should be considered in the review of the two projects. Once finalized, the List of Issues will guide the NEB hearings by identifying relevant topics regarding the Energy East and Eastern Mainline Projects. Additionally, as part of the NEB’s responsibilities under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012, the Board is also seeking input on the scope of factors for the Environmental Assessment (EA).

The deadline for public comments is May 31, 2017 and the Board expects to release the final List of Issues by early summer 2017.

For more information on these recent developments, including the process for providing comments, please see the following documents on the NEB website:

Further information about the Energy East and Eastern Mainline Projects, including information about the NEB’s regulatory process and project updates, can be found in English and French on the NEB website.

Survey: What are your NAFTA Priorities?

Dear colleague,

Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) in partnership with the Canadian Manufacturing Coalition and UPS® Canada is conducting a short survey asking businesses about what they see as the biggest issues, concerns and opportunities in future NAFTA renegotiations. Your responses to this survey will directly influence our policy and advocacy efforts with the federal government on your behalf. Our goal is to ensure that Canadian manufacturers receive the best possible access to NAFTA markets while ensuring that trade is as free and fair as possible.

To ensure that we are as effective as possible, we need to hear from you. Please help us help you by filling out this survey and sharing it with your network. The survey itself consists of 14 questions and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. The deadline for completion is May 31, 2017 and your responses will be held in strict confidence.

CME supports rules-based free trade that recognizes the integrated nature of the North American economy, and has at its core reciprocal and open market access, and effective dispute resolution. We are already playing a leadership role in defending and promoting the interests of Canadian manufacturers and exporters. CME staff are directly involved in several senior government advisory committees that are shaping Canada’s negotiating position on NAFTA. Your issues and concerns will be well-represented when those negotiations begin.

The new Trump Administration has signaled its intent to renegotiate the terms of the agreement with a view to getting a “better deal” for America. While any such renegotiation offers a unique opportunity to modernize and update the 25-year-old trade agreement, it carries with it risks as well. There are concerns that the negotiated status quo under NAFTA – which involved significant give and take by all parties – will simply become the new starting point for additional concessions that favour the United States.

Thank you in advance for your input and your support.

Mathew Wilson,
Senior Vice President
Visit the Survey

Mathew Wilson,
Vice-président principal
